Three Key Steps to Secure PC Software

Secure pc software is essential to safeguarding your computer, mobile device and your data from hackers. Hackers, also referred to as cybercriminals, gain access to your computer for various reasons. They may steal the data, alter or delete data that you value. Hackers have malicious intentions, unlike other thieves who may steal items for legitimate reasons. They are more interested in gaining access to your personal data, often before you even realize something has gone wrong.

The three essential steps to protect your PC software are passwords, a firewall and virus protection. If you adhere to these best practices your computer will be much less likely to be compromised by hackers, malware or ransomware (software that encrypts your information and demands payment to unlock it).

Change the name of the administrator account. Choose a password that is strong and contains lower- and uppercase letters as well as numbers and computer symbol. Avoid using a password like 1234, as hackers can use automated software to crack passwords that are easy to guess in minutes.

Update your operating system and other programs. The majority of software updates include security fixes that protect against hacking. Install all patches and turn on automatic updates whenever they become available to minimize the amount of time that you are vulnerable to intruders.

If you own a laptop or any other portable device that isn’t being used, ensure that your drive is secure. This is especially important for UF Students. Windows allows users to enable encryption by clicking Settings > Update and Security > Device encryption. This will secure the entire internal drive as well as most external drives like SD cards.
